About Me

My name is Chris and I was born on September 17th, 1999 in LeHigh Acres, Florida but raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti for the first 10 years of my life. There are a myriad of reasons why I no longer live there, but the the primary one is the devastating earthquake that shook Haiti on January 12th, 2010. 


Many people lost their lives that day and Haiti is a mess to this day. The crime rate has been constantly rising, the government is as corrupt as ever and I am left with not knowing whether my parents will be alive after my next class, meal or even breath. What motivates me is to make them proud of the young man that has had the honor of calling them his parents. They deserve only the best version of myself and although I do not always hold my end of the bargain, they always love me unconditionally. If I ever become even half of the individuals that they are, I will consider my life a success.

T he film Moonlight , “ divided into three chapters—“Little,” “Chiron” and “Black”—the three names used to refer to the same person that we follow from childhood through adolescence to adulthood. He’s a boy, [then a teen] and then a man who has trouble figuring out his place in the world, which is also articulated by the character being played by three separate, all-remarkable actors.” (Rogerebert.com) The beauty in the movie is the fact that despite the fact that all three actors essentially play the character that makes up Chiron, they each display growth at each stage which creates a sense of consistency in the midst of the multitude of changes that take place in the main character’s life. On its own, Moonlight gives viewers a different narrative than many cultural mainstreams as the plot tackles universal themes concerning masculinity, fatherhood, manhood, family and most importantly sexuality. Democracy and Civic Engagement

D emocracy can only exist when informed citizens work along with institutions that enforce the law fairly and with honor. Unfortunately, there has been a disturbing trend growing within the last few years. Voters are staying at home and not going to the polls yet they believe that change must take place at every level of this country. I find it imperative to state that one of the most powerful agents of change in any government is the voice of the people. M artin Luther King once said  " Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial “outside agitator” idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.” Although his statement's purpose might not have directly been aimed at the lack of civic engagement that plagues America today, it can still be applied to modern times because in reality, anyone who doesn't use their voting rights is in a way an outsider.
